Green Cleaning and Why it’s Important

What is green cleaning?

Green cleaning is commonly defined as the use of products and services that have less of an impact on the environment and human health than other products used for the same purpose. Essentially, its cleaning in a way that is safe for people and the environment, but also sustainable in the long run.

You may be wondering what can be so dangerous about normal products. Well, let us tell you, the toxins, and chemicals that you are exposed to with other methods can cause a lot of damage to your body, water, air, and the entire ecosystem.

Switching to green cleaning products can be very beneficious for your health and it also prevents malicious chemicals from being released into your surroundings.

What are some green products?

Using substances like baking soda, lemons, and vinegar work very well for cleaning home surfaces. However,  there are other products that are manufactured to be green and are healthy for the environment. How do you identify them? Green products usually have the following characteristics: no phosphates, no artificial fragrances, no artificial colors, organically grown ingredients, no chlorine, and biodegradable.

You may have already heard about green cleaning. Perhaps you weren’t sure what it was or why it’s so much better than normal cleaning. Well, we’ll be naming some of the reasons down below:

Safer Home

Some of the average products are flammable, toxic, and include many other warnings. You can tell that they aren’t really safe. The exposure in your home elevates, affecting your family members as well as pets who tend to be very  vulnerable to these products. Additionally, household cleaning supplies are accountable for many poisoning reports. Try to minimize your exposure to harmful chemicals by incorporating green methods.

You can even feel better in your home with green cleaning products. Not only that, but you can feel confident that the products you are currently using won’t be detrimental for you and your loved ones.

It’s also important to know and have in mind that many of the hazardous chemicals in products you normally use are neurotoxins, mutagens, carcinogens, and others. It is definitely worth getting rid of them and using natural products.

Clean air

The use of conventional products can end up causing a spike in pollution indoors, something we definitely don’t want. VOC, or Volatile Organic Compounds have been associated with a lot of health problems such as liver damage, kidneys, and even the central nervous system which can also linger in the air long after use. This is a problem can easily avoid by using green products.

Is it hard to find green products?

Honestly, that’s why it’s important to have an idea when it comes to  ingredients and chemicals in your products in order to know how they might react with each other. Many brands can do something called “greenwashing” in which products claim being “eco-friendly” and “non-toxic”, but the ingredients used may prove otherwise. Such labels can be misleading since they have unhealthy ingredients in them.

To tell if a product is really green, make sure to read the label. The EPA program has a mandate that demand labels be added to products that follow the EPA’s criteria for ingredients. Some products have the Dfe label which stands for Design for the Environment. Other products have a low VOC label which signifies that they might have a low level of volatile organic compounds.

The Green Business Program requires the use of cleaning products that have a third-party certification. The most common certifications are the following:

  • Green Seal: it is also known as the original cleaning certification. The green seal also includes a thorough evaluation of the entire life cycle of the product.
  • Safer Choice: this is the  EPA’s own certification that makes sure that the products have the safest ingredients.
  • Ecologo: a certification that is issued by Underwriters Laboratories that has had experience for over 100 years in developing products that would ensure everyone’s safety.

Change for the Better

If you want to effectively kill and stop the spread of infection or viruses it is essential to have an appropriate product for disinfection. However, buying green products after using other conventional ones may be a bit tough. You might opt by sticking to your trusty ol’ bleach.

However, whatever choices you make about your cleaning supplies and practices, there is a huge variety of environmentally friendly choices for green cleaning. If you want to incorporate a little green into your cleaning care routine, you should definitely begin by using natural products. And if you want to invest in green products, we personally recommend you buy them in bulk or buy the concentrated products. With a little research, you may be able to green up your household cleaning routine to create a healthier, safer environment.
