Make your Home Smell Good

We should be honest. Everyone wants a home that smells good. However, we can all have a different definition of what “good” smells like, for instance, different fragrances be it minty, medicinal, floral or any other. However, even though we may hate it, no matter how clean you attempt to keep your home, many odors can develop naturally over time.  Did you know that according to the Monell Chemical Sciences Center malodors like your smelly dog, stinky socks, or an overflowing garbage can will cause physiological stress? That is why keeping our homes clean and making them smell good is really beneficial to your family’s health.

There are tons of ways to freshen up your home’s aroma on a daily basis. We have compiled a few but may we remind you that a routine home cleaning is indeed necessary to reduce unpleasant smells. A proper deep cleaning, removal of clutter and also taking out the trash can go a long way. If you are tempted to burn a few fragrant candles for a quick fix of smells, we recommend you heed our advice instead. Adding fragrance can certainly mask problems but only temporarily. It will not solve the root of all the unpleasant smells.  A clean home will.

Refresh your rugs or carpets

Tiles and hardwood floors may not absorb stench, but your carpets and rugs do. These smells can intensify after food spills and any other messes. You can relieve this by sprinkling a bit of baking soda all over the surface of the carpet and letting it sit for a few hours. Afterwards, you can vacuum as you normally would. This same method works for your pet beds.

Natural refreshers

Trying to remove any kind of smell can be done with natural products that you can find right this instant in your pantry.

  • Deactivated charcoal: perhaps not as common but deactivated charcoal can absorb malodors and it does not add a scent to the air.
  • Baking Soda: Just as baking soda works to absorb odors in the microwave, it can also work to absorb odors. Place a bowl in a room and let it do its work.
  • Lemon: water can absorb odor but adding slices of lemon can provide a clean citrus-y scent that can liven up your rooms.
  • Vinegar: perhaps one of the most used natural remedies. Its smell might be a bit pungent but placing an open bowl of apple cider or distilled vinegar can trap odors easily.
  • Vanilla or peppermint extract: Saturate a few cotton balls with the extracts and place them on small plates around the room.

Simmer herbs

Get some boiling water and add the ingredients you have chosen like fruits, flowers, cinnamon, etc. and allow them to boil for three minutes. Reduce the heat and let it simmer, checking the level of water every 30 minutes and add more if it is needed. If you would like you can also use a slow cooker.

Scatter candles around your home

Strategic placement is essential to boost the efficiency of your candles. Once way would be to place candles near your linen closet or other places where fabrics are. Do not light your candles. The fabrics will absorb the scent.

When making your selection, it is best to choose candles made from beeswax or soy and those without wicks that contain metal. Candles with paraffin release VOCs into the air so you should definitely avoid those.

Potpourri, a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant materials. It adds a decorative look to bowls around your rooms and adds lovely scents to a room. You can make your own potpourri by gathering materials and allowing them to dry for some weeks. Once they are dried, ass oils and other ingredients as you prefer best.

Essential diffusers

Essential oils diffuser makes use of the oil, breaking it down and using water as method to disperse the oils around the air in the form of a mist.

Essential oils are liquid extracts of various potentially beneficial plants. Manufacturing processes can extract the from these plants all of its useful compounds. Essential oils often have a much stronger smell than the plants they come from and contain higher levels of active ingredients. However, essential oils are extremely beneficial and can definitely be used to refresh your home.
